Manglik dosha from lagna, Moon and Venus, with cancellations
This article shows how to test a chart for Manglik dosha from three reference points, apply a short list of cancellations, and combine two charts into a pair result for matching. By the end you will be able to check any chart by hand in a minute and know exactly which choices you made along the way.
Definitions
Manglik (Kuja, Mangal or Bhauma) dosha. The condition where Mars occupies certain houses counted from a reference point in the birth chart. It is checked in marriage matching alongside Ashtakoota (guna milan).
Reference points. The three points Mars is counted from: the lagna (ascendant), the natal Moon sign and natal Venus. Each is checked separately.
Manglik houses. The 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses from the reference point.
Whole-sign counting. Houses are counted sign by sign. If the reference is in Aquarius, Aquarius is the 1st, Pisces the 2nd, and so on. Degrees do not move a planet into another house in this method.
Cancellation (parihara). A condition in the chart that classical practice says removes or neutralises the dosha. Lists of cancellations vary a great deal between schools.
Graha drishti. Parashari planetary aspect. Every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself. Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Counting includes the planet's own sign as 1.
The method, step by step
Step 1: Find the sign of Mars and the three reference signs
Note the sign Mars occupies in the rasi chart (D1). Then note the lagna sign, the Moon's sign and Venus's sign. Only signs matter, not degrees.
Step 2: Count Mars's house from each reference
For each reference, count from the reference sign (as 1) to the sign of Mars. The formula is:
house = ((Mars sign − reference sign) mod 12) + 1, with signs numbered Aries = 0 to Pisces = 11.
If Mars is in the same sign as the reference, it is in the 1st house from it.
Step 3: Mark each reference that gives a Manglik house
| House of Mars from the reference | Manglik? |
|---|---|
| 1st | Yes |
| 2nd | No (yes in many South Indian lists) |
| 3rd | No |
| 4th | Yes |
| 5th, 6th | No |
| 7th | Yes |
| 8th | Yes |
| 9th, 10th, 11th | No |
| 12th | Yes |
The chart is Manglik if any one of the three references gives a Manglik house. Record which references triggered it, because astrologers often weigh a lagna-based dosha more heavily than one seen only from Venus.
Step 4: Check the cancellations, in order
If the chart is Manglik, test these three conditions. The first one that applies is recorded as the reason.
| Order | Cancellation | How to test it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mars in own or exaltation sign | Mars in Aries or Scorpio (own) or Capricorn (exaltation) |
| 2 | Mars conjunct Jupiter | Mars and Jupiter in the same sign |
| 3 | Jupiter aspects Mars | Mars is in the 5th, 7th or 9th sign counted from Jupiter |
These are sign-based tests. A conjunction here means sharing a sign, not falling within a set number of degrees.
Step 5: Combine the two charts
For matching, look at each person's result after cancellation. A dosha that has a cancellation is treated as inactive for the pair test.
| Groom | Bride | Pair result |
|---|---|---|
| Uncancelled Manglik | Uncancelled Manglik | Both: the doshas are treated as balancing each other |
| Uncancelled Manglik | Not Manglik, or cancelled | One: this is the case matching practice flags |
| Not Manglik, or cancelled | Uncancelled Manglik | One |
| Not Manglik, or cancelled | Not Manglik, or cancelled | None |
AstroReads follows exactly these five steps. It counts whole signs from the lagna, Moon and Venus, checks the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, tests the three cancellations in the order above, and reports the pair as "both", "one" or "none". An individual uncancelled dosha, and a pair result of "one", are marked as challenging; everything else is shown as neutral, with the reason written out.
Worked example
Both charts below are fictional births, used only to illustrate the method. Positions are sidereal (Lahiri), whole-sign houses.
- Example A: 14 Mar 1990, 06:20 IST, Pune. Lagna Aquarius 20°44′.
- Example B: 02 Aug 1993, 21:45 IST, Lucknow. Lagna Pisces 14°32′.
Example A
The placements that matter:
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| Lagna | Aquarius |
| Moon | Virgo 28°28′ |
| Venus | Capricorn 14°10′ |
| Mars | Capricorn 8°02′ (exalted) |
| Jupiter | Gemini 7°34′ |
Counting Mars's house from each reference:
| Reference | Reference sign | Mars from it | Manglik? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Aquarius | 12th (Capricorn) | Yes |
| Moon | Virgo | 5th (Capricorn) | No |
| Venus | Capricorn | 1st (same sign) | Yes |
Example A is Manglik from the lagna and from Venus, not from the Moon.
Now the cancellations. Test 1: Mars is in Capricorn, its exaltation sign. The first cancellation applies, so the recorded reason is "Mars in own or exaltation sign". For interest, the other two tests would not have applied: Jupiter is in Gemini, not Capricorn, and from Gemini Jupiter aspects Libra (5th), Sagittarius (7th) and Aquarius (9th), not Capricorn.
Example B
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| Lagna | Pisces |
| Moon | Capricorn 18°33′ |
| Venus | Gemini 7°04′ |
| Mars | Virgo 0°23′ |
| Jupiter | Virgo 16°14′ |
| Reference | Reference sign | Mars from it | Manglik? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Pisces | 7th (Virgo) | Yes |
| Moon | Capricorn | 9th (Virgo) | No |
| Venus | Gemini | 4th (Virgo) | Yes |
Example B is also Manglik from the lagna and from Venus, not from the Moon.
Cancellations: Test 1 fails, because Virgo is neither Mars's own sign nor its exaltation. Test 2 passes, because Jupiter is also in Virgo. The recorded reason is "Mars conjunct Jupiter". Note that Mars is at 0°23′ and Jupiter at 16°14′, nearly 16° apart. Under the sign-based rule that does not matter; an astrologer who requires a close degree conjunction would judge this differently (see below).
The pair
| Manglik from | Cancelled by | Active for the pair? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | Lagna, Venus | Mars in own or exaltation sign | No |
| Example B | Lagna, Venus | Mars conjunct Jupiter | No |
Neither person has an uncancelled dosha, so the pair result is none. It is worth reading that carefully. Both charts are Manglik by the counting rule, and each is cancelled by a different classical condition. The pair result says only that, after applying this list of cancellations, there is no one-sided dosha to flag. It is not a statement about the marriage, and an astrologer using a different cancellation list could reach a different pair result. The 7th house, its lord, Venus and the KP 7th cusp sub-lord still need their own judgement.
Where traditions differ
Manglik dosha is one of the least standardised rules in Vedic matching. The main disagreements are these.
Is the 2nd house included? Many South Indian astrologers add the 2nd house, giving 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12. North Indian practice more often uses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12. Adding the 2nd house makes roughly half of all charts Manglik from any single reference.
Which references count? The rule as widely quoted checks the lagna, the Moon and Venus. Some astrologers use the lagna only. Others check the Moon as well but not Venus, or treat a dosha seen from Venus alone as minor.
Which cancellations? Published cancellation lists run to a dozen or more conditions. Common additions include:
- particular sign placements of Mars in particular houses (for example, exceptions for Mars in certain signs in the 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th);
- the age of the native, on the view that the dosha weakens after a certain age (the age quoted varies);
- benefics in kendras, or a strong 7th lord;
- Mars aspected by or associated with other benefics, not only Jupiter;
- Saturn, Rahu or Ketu placed in the same Manglik houses in the partner's chart, treated as balancing the dosha;
- both partners being Manglik, which almost every school accepts as balancing.
AstroReads uses a short, stated list: own or exaltation sign, conjunction with Jupiter, and Jupiter's aspect, plus the "both Manglik" rule at the pair level. Every finding names the rule that applied, so an astrologer who follows a longer or different list can see exactly where their own judgement should take over. Other lists are legitimate and widely used.
Signs or degrees? This method is sign-based throughout. Some astrologers count from bhava cusps (in KP, from Placidus cusps), so a Mars late in a sign can fall in a different bhava. Some require a close orb for the Jupiter conjunction. Example B shows how this matters: a 16° gap is a conjunction by sign but not by a tight orb.
How much weight at all? Some KP practitioners give Manglik dosha little or no weight and judge marriage from the 7th cusp sub-lord and its significations. Parashari astrologers usually check it but differ widely on how strongly it should count against a match.
Common mistakes
- Checking the lagna only and calling the chart "not Manglik". If your rule uses three references, check all three, and record which ones triggered.
- Counting degrees instead of signs. In whole-sign counting, Mars at 0°23′ Virgo is in Virgo. Moving it into the previous sign because it is "nearly" there is not part of the method.
- Forgetting that Jupiter aspects by sign. Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects are counted from Jupiter's sign, including that sign as 1.
- Stopping at "cancelled". Cancellation answers the Manglik question as the rule frames it. It does not tell you anything about the rest of the marriage promise.
- Not stating the list used. Two astrologers can both be right and still disagree, because they use different cancellation lists. Say which list you used when you report the result to a client.
- Using alarming language. Manglik dosha is a matching factor, not a verdict. Describe it in plain terms and give it its place among the other factors.

Questions
Which houses make a chart Manglik?
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the reference point. Many South Indian astrologers also include the 2nd house.
Should Manglik dosha be checked from the Moon and Venus as well as the lagna?
The widely used rule checks all three: the lagna, the Moon sign and Venus. Some astrologers check the lagna alone, or give the Moon and Venus less weight. A chart counts as Manglik here if any one reference gives Mars in a Manglik house.
Does Mars in Capricorn cancel Manglik dosha?
Under the common rule, yes: Mars exalted in Capricorn, or in its own signs Aries and Scorpio, is one of the classical cancellations. Other cancellation lists exist and not every astrologer accepts this one.
What happens when both partners are Manglik?
Matching practice generally holds that the dosha in one chart is balanced by the dosha in the other, so two uncancelled Manglik charts are treated as compatible on this point. The concern is when only one partner carries an uncancelled dosha.
Does cancellation mean Mars no longer matters for marriage?
No. Cancellation only answers the Manglik question as the rule frames it. Mars's house, sign, aspects and dasha role still feed into the wider reading of the 7th house and marriage timing.
