KP 7th cusp sub-lord: judging the promise of marriage

Published

This article shows how to judge the promise of marriage in Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) from the sub-lord of the 7th cusp. You will be able to find that sub-lord, sort the houses it signifies into supporting and opposing groups, handle the case where it signifies both, and test which dasha periods can bring the marriage forward. Two fictional charts are worked through.

Terms used

  • Cusp. KP houses start at Placidus cusps (Krishnamurti ayanamsa). A house runs from one cusp to the next, so a planet's KP house can differ from its whole-sign house.
  • Star lord. The lord of the nakshatra (13°20′) in which a planet or cusp falls.
  • Sub-lord. Each nakshatra is split into nine unequal parts in proportion to the Vimshottari years, starting with the star lord's part. The lord of the part containing a cusp is its sub-lord.
  • CSL. Cusp sub-lord. "7th CSL" means the sub-lord of the 7th cusp.
  • Significator. A planet tied to a house by occupation or ownership, its own or its star lord's. The companion article on the four levels covers this.
  • Agent. Rahu and Ketu act for other planets and take on the houses those planets occupy and own.
  • MD / AD / PD. Mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha: the first three levels of the Vimshottari dasha. KP texts often call them dasha, bhukti and antara.

The principle

Krishnamurti taught that a planet shows its matters through its star lord, while the sub-lord decides whether they turn out favourably. Applied to cusps: the sub-lord of a cusp decides whether that house's matters are promised at all. For marriage the cusp is the 7th, read against two groups of houses.

Group Houses Why
Supporting 2, 7, 11 2: addition to the family. 7: partner, marriage. 11: fulfilment of desires.
Opposing 1, 6, 10 Each is 12th (loss) from a supporting house: 1 is 12th from 2, 6 is 12th from 7, 10 is 12th from 11.

The opposing group is specific to marriage: each house negates one of the supporting ones.

The method, step by step

Step 1: Cast the KP chart

Use Placidus cusps and the Krishnamurti ayanamsa. Place each planet in the cusp segment that contains it. Note each cusp's sign lord, star lord and sub-lord.

Step 2: Find the 7th CSL

Read the sub-lord from the 7th cusp's longitude. A small birth-time error can move the cusp into the next sub, so if it is near a boundary, rectify first.

Step 3: List the houses the 7th CSL signifies

Build the house-wise significator table with its four levels, then collect every house in which the 7th CSL appears at any level. Because levels 1 and 3 are about planets in the star of occupants and owners, this list already carries the CSL's star lord's houses.

Node agency changes the table. Rahu or Ketu acts, in order, for planets conjunct it within 3°20′, planets aspecting its sign (Parashari aspects), its star lord, then its sign lord. A node acting for an occupant is listed as an occupant, so planets in its star signify that house at level 1; the same applies to owners at level 3. A node does not follow a principal into another planet's star: it takes the houses its principals occupy and own, not the houses they reach through their own star lords.

Step 4: Sort the houses into the two groups

Intersect the list with {2, 7, 11} and with {1, 6, 10}. Houses outside both groups (3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12) are noted but do not decide the verdict in this basic reading.

Step 5: Read the verdict

CSL signifies Verdict Reading
At least one of 2, 7, 11 and none of 1, 6, 10 Promised The chart supports marriage; timing is the next question.
At least one of 2, 7, 11 and at least one of 1, 6, 10 Conditional Both support and obstruction are indicated. Needs judgement.
None of 2, 7, 11 Not indicated The 7th CSL does not support marriage on this rule.

This is AstroReads's default ("Standard") marriage verdict: the 7th Placidus CSL, its four-level significations (nodes acting as agents), 2, 7, 11 against 1, 6, 10. It returns "promised", "conditional" or "not indicated" with the houses behind it: a starting point, not a prediction.

If the CSL is retrograde, or in a retrograde planet's star, KP reads delay. This is a caution, never a denial, and is stated only when something is promised.

Step 6: Judge a conditional verdict

"Conditional" is not a polite word for "no". The CSL is tied to both sides and, on this rule, the chart does not settle which dominates. Astrologers commonly weigh:

  1. Level of each link. Occupation (levels 1 and 2) is usually treated as stronger than ownership alone (level 4).
  2. How the link arises. Many practitioners give less weight to a negative house reached only through a node's agency or only through ownership.
  3. Which negative house. The 6th is 12th from the 7th itself, so many read a 6th-house link as the most direct objection.
  4. The dasha. Periods whose lords between them cover 2, 7 and 11 are where the supporting side is likely to show.
  5. Other checks. Some then look at the 7th lord, Venus and the 7th cusp's star lord.

None of these turns a conditional verdict into a guarantee. The honest outcome describes what supports the matter, what opposes it, and when each is active.

Step 7: Timing (once the promise is assessed)

KP's joint-period rule is applied to each PD:

  • A PD is supportive when the MD, AD and PD lords each signify at least one of 2, 7, 11, and together signify all three.
  • A PD is challenging when neither the AD lord nor the PD lord signifies any of 2, 7, 11 and the AD lord signifies at least one of 1, 6, 10.
  • Otherwise it is neutral on this rule.

The MD lord counts: a house it signifies can complete the set the AD and PD lords leave open. A retrograde lord, or one in a retrograde planet's star, carries the same delay caution as the CSL.

Supportive PDs are one vote; Parashari antardasha activation and Jupiter's gochar (weighted by Ashtakavarga bindus) each add one. Two agreeing votes make a moderate window, three a strong one. Saturn's transit appears only as a reason, in a double transit, and adds no vote.

Worked example

Both charts are fictional births. Positions use the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, Placidus cusps, mean nodes and the 3°20′ node orb.

Example A: 14 Mar 1990, 06:20 IST, Pune

The 7th cusp is at Leo 20°50′. Its sign lord is the Sun, star lord Venus, sub-lord Jupiter and sub-sub-lord Mercury. Jupiter is not retrograde and is not in a retrograde planet's star, so no delay caution applies.

Jupiter signifies houses 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11 and 12.

Group Houses Jupiter signifies
Supporting (2, 7, 11) 2, 11
Opposing (1, 6, 10) 1, 6
Other 4, 8, 12

Verdict: conditional.

Now weigh it. Jupiter (Gemini 7°40′) is in Rahu's star. Rahu (Capricorn 21°01′) has no planet within 3°20′ and none aspecting Capricorn, so it acts for its star lord, the Moon, and its sign lord, Saturn. From the house-wise table:

  • House 11: level 1 and level 4 (Jupiter owns the 11th, cusp in Sagittarius). Rahu counts as an 11th-house occupant as Saturn's agent, and Jupiter is in Rahu's star.
  • House 2: level 4 only. The 2nd cusp is in Pisces.
  • House 1: level 3. The 1st-house owners are Saturn and Rahu (again as Saturn's agent).
  • House 6: level 3. The 6th cusp is in Cancer, owned by the Moon, and Rahu acts for the Moon as its star lord.

So the strong 11th-house link and both opposing links run through Rahu's agency; the 2nd-house link is only by ownership. The 6th is the most direct objection to the 7th, but here it arrives at level 3 through a node. Someone who lets the nodes act only for their sign lord would drop the 6th from Jupiter's list, a method choice discussed below.

Timing. On the reference date the dasha running is Jupiter MD, Rahu AD (2026-02-06 to 2028-07-01). The marriage window opens three days after the reference date and runs from 2026-10-12 to 2027-02-28, supportive and moderate. The MD lord Jupiter signifies 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12; the AD lord Rahu signifies 1, 6, 8, 11, 12. Neither signifies the 7th, so the PD lord has to supply it. One PD does:

PD lord PD signifies
Saturn 1, 7, 11, 12

The window is exactly the Saturn PD. The Jupiter PD running on the reference date (to 2026-10-12) and the Mercury PD that follows Saturn do not signify the 7th, so they fail the joint rule. Every lord signifies the 11th, Saturn supplies the 7th and the Jupiter MD supplies the 2nd. No lord is retrograde. All three lords also signify the opposing 1st, and Jupiter and Rahu the 6th; the rule does not count these against a supportive period, but they call for care. The window also carries Jupiter aspecting the 7th from the Moon (5 bindus), Jupiter occupying the 7th from the lagna (4 bindus), and a Jupiter–Saturn double transit on the 7th from the Moon.

Example B: 02 Aug 1993, 21:45 IST, Lucknow

The 7th cusp is at Virgo 14°38′. Sign lord Mercury, star lord Moon, sub-lord Jupiter, sub-sub-lord Mercury. Again there is no retrograde link to the CSL.

Jupiter signifies houses 1, 5, 7, 10 and 11.

Group Houses Jupiter signifies
Supporting (2, 7, 11) 7, 11
Opposing (1, 6, 10) 1, 10
Other 5

Verdict: conditional.

The levels are clearer here:

  • House 7: Jupiter is the occupant (level 2). It sits at Virgo 16°20′, past the cusp. Ketu is listed beside it as an occupant: Jupiter's 9th aspect falls on Taurus, where Ketu sits, so Ketu acts for Jupiter.
  • House 11: Jupiter is at level 1. It is in the star of the Moon, and the Moon occupies the 11th.
  • Houses 1 and 10: Jupiter appears only at level 4, as owner (the 1st cusp is in Pisces, the 10th in Sagittarius).

Support comes through occupation, opposition only through ownership. Astrologers who weight levels would read this as leaning toward support, while still stating that 1 and 10 are present.

Mars, at Virgo 0°29′, is in the 7th sign but the 6th KP house, because the 7th cusp falls later in Virgo.

Timing. The running dasha on the reference date is Jupiter MD (signifies 1, 5, 7, 10, 11), Saturn AD (ending 2026-11-02). The brief shows four windows, all supportive:

Window Confidence Basis
2026-06-01 to 2026-10-31 Moderate KP: Saturn AD (2, 6, 9, 11, 12) with Rahu PD (2, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12) and Jupiter PD (1, 5, 7, 10, 11). Jupiter transiting the 7th from the Moon (8 bindus).
2027-01-24 to 2027-02-27 Moderate Parashari: Mercury AD rules the 7th from the lagna. Jupiter transiting the 7th from the Moon.
2027-02-27 to 2027-06-25 Strong KP: Mercury AD (1, 4, 7, 10) with Ketu PD (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11) and Venus PD (2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12). Parashari activation. Jupiter's transit.
2027-06-25 to 2027-09-01 Moderate KP: Mercury AD with Venus PD. Parashari activation.

In the first window the Jupiter MD gives the 7th, which neither Saturn nor Rahu signifies. Saturn, the AD lord, is retrograde in the birth chart, so both KP reasons carry the delay caution.

Mercury signifies the 7th, so none of its PDs can be challenging. In the Mercury PD before the strong window, Jupiter and Mercury cover 7 and 11 but not 2, so only the Parashari and gochar votes count. The Ketu and Venus PDs bring in the 2nd, and with KP joining, the window is strong while Jupiter's transit lasts.

Where traditions differ

  • Does the 7th CSL decide alone? Krishnamurti treated the CSL as deciding the promise. Parashari astrologers judge marriage from the 7th house, its lord, Venus as karaka, the navamsa and the dasha, without sub-lords. Many KP practitioners cross-check Venus and the 7th lord.
  • Which houses oppose marriage. The usual KP grouping is 1, 6, 10. Some use 6, 8, 12 instead or as well, carrying over the Parashari dusthanas. Some add the 5th as supporting for love marriage.
  • Standard or 4-step. The Standard reading collects all four levels of the CSL's significations into one list. The 4-step method follows a chain: the CSL and its star lord show the matter, and the CSL's sub lord and that sub lord's star lord decide it. The two can disagree on the same chart. Standard is the default here; an astrologer can choose the 4-step method instead.
  • Level weighting. Some astrologers count only the stronger levels. The verdict here treats any level as a link and leaves weighting to the astrologer.
  • Rahu and Ketu. Variants differ on which planets a node acts for, in what order, and within what conjunction orb. This changes what a planet in a node's star signifies, as the 6th house in Example A shows. Some teachers also let a node carry what its principals get through their own star lords; the method here does not, which keeps Rahu in Example A from signifying the 7th.
  • Timing rule. Some practitioners judge a period mainly from the AD and PD lords. The joint rule used here asks all three lords to take part.
  • Cusps. KP uses Placidus. Parashari astrologers who use cusps often use equal houses or Sripati bhavas, which can change the sub-lord.

AstroReads uses Placidus with the Krishnamurti ayanamsa; the Standard verdict by default, with the 4-step method as an option; all four levels unweighted; nodes acting for conjunct planets (within 3°20′, or 8° if the astrologer widens it), aspecting planets, their star lord and their sign lord, in that order; the joint MD–AD–PD timing rule; and 1, 6, 10 as the opposing group. Other choices are legitimate.

Common mistakes

  • Using the 7th lord instead of the 7th CSL. In KP the sign lord of the cusp is a significator, not the decider.
  • Ignoring cusp sensitivity. A cusp near a sub boundary can change the verdict.
  • Reading "conditional" as "denied". It means mixed evidence. Report both sides.
  • Reading retrograde as denial. A retrograde CSL or dasha lord points to delay, not refusal.
  • Placing planets by sign. A planet early in a sign can belong to the previous KP house, as Mars does in Example B.
  • Timing without a promise check. Dasha windows do not create a promise the CSL does not support.

Questions

Which houses does the 7th cusp sub-lord need to signify for marriage in KP?

Houses 2, 7 and 11 support marriage. Houses 1, 6 and 10, which fall 12th from 2, 7 and 11, are read as working against it.

What does a conditional 7th CSL verdict mean?

The 7th cusp sub-lord signifies at least one of 2, 7, 11 and at least one of 1, 6, 10. The chart indicates both support and obstruction, and the astrologer has to weigh how strongly each group is signified before saying anything about the promise.

Is the 7th cusp sub-lord enough on its own to judge marriage?

In Krishnamurti's method the cusp sub-lord decides whether the matter is promised at all. Many astrologers still cross-check the 7th lord, Venus and the dasha lords before giving an opinion.

Does a retrograde 7th cusp sub-lord deny marriage?

In KP a retrograde cusp sub-lord, or one in the star of a retrograde planet, is read as delay rather than denial. It is a caution that matters only when the marriage is otherwise promised.

How is the timing of marriage judged once it is promised?

Through the Vimshottari dasha, using KP's joint-period rule: the mahadasha (MD), antardasha (AD) and pratyantardasha (PD) lords should each signify at least one of 2, 7 and 11, and together signify all three. A period in which neither the AD nor the PD lord signifies any of them, and the AD lord signifies 1, 6 or 10, is read as unhelpful for the event.
