Each bar is the sign the planet is in, month by month. The hatched strip (////) marks a retrograde spell: for a while the planet seems to move backward through the signs, as seen from Earth. It is a long-watched part of a transit, not a planet really turning round. Rahu and Ketu always move backward, so they get no strip.

What is a transit (gochar)?

A transit, gochar in Hindi, is a planet moving through the zodiac today. Astrologers read where each planet is now against your birth chart — usually from your Moon sign (rashi) — to see which areas of life a period stirs.

The slow planets matter most

The Moon changes sign every two and a half days and the Sun every month, so their transits colour days and weeks. Jupiter (about a year in a sign), Saturn (about two and a half years) and Rahu–Ketu (about eighteen months) shape the longer chapters — Sade Sati is Saturn's transit over and around your Moon. Retrograde (vakri) planets

Seen from the Earth, a planet sometimes appears to move backwards for a few weeks or months. Vedic astrology calls it vakri and reads it as a time to revisit and finish matters of that planet rather than start new ones.

Questions

What is a transit (gochar)?

A planet's movement through the signs now, read against your birth chart, usually from your Moon sign.

How long does each planet stay in a sign?

The Moon about 2½ days, the Sun, Mercury and Venus about a month, Mars about 6 weeks, Jupiter about a year, Saturn about 2½ years, and Rahu and Ketu about 18 months.

Which transits matter most?

Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu–Ketu, because they stay long in a sign; Sade Sati and Jupiter's transit from your Moon are the best known.

What does retrograde mean?

A planet appearing to move backwards as seen from the Earth (vakri). It is read as a time to revisit rather than begin.

Are these sidereal or tropical positions?

Sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as in Vedic astrology — about 24° behind the tropical (Western) zodiac.

Do transits affect everyone the same way?

No. The same transit falls in a different house for each Moon sign and lagna, so its effect differs from chart to chart.
