Why the Moon sign?

Vedic astrology reads the daily Rashifal, Sade Sati and much of your nature from the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It changes every two to three days, so the birth time matters on the days it moves.

How your moon sign is worked out

Your moon sign (rashi) is the sign the Moon was in at your birth, measured in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as Vedic astrology does. The Moon moves about 13° a day and changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so on a day it changes sign, your birth time decides which one is yours.

Your nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′ each, and your lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. The lagna changes about every two hours, so it needs your exact time and place.

Moon sign, sun sign and ascendant

Vedic astrology reads the daily rashifal from your Moon sign, matches marriages by nakshatra, and draws the houses of your chart from the lagna. Western 'star signs' are Sun signs in the tropical zodiac, about 24° ahead of the sidereal one — which is why many people's Vedic sign is the one before their Western sign.

Questions

What is a Moon sign (rashi)?

The sign the Moon was in when you were born, in the sidereal zodiac Vedic astrology uses. Your daily Rashifal, Sade Sati and much of a Vedic reading are read from it.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology measures the signs against the fixed stars, about 24° behind the Western (tropical) zodiac, and reads the Moon's sign rather than the Sun's. Both differences can change your sign.

What if I don't know my birth time?

The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so a date alone is usually enough. If it changed sign on your birth day, the calculator shows both signs and the time it moved. The Lagna (ascendant) needs the birth time.
