The five limbs

Tithi
The lunar day: each 12° the Moon moves ahead of the Sun. Thirty make a lunar month.
Vara
The weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise and ruled by a planet.
Nakshatra
The Moon's lunar mansion: one of 27 stretches of 13°20′ of the zodiac.
Yoga
One of 27 parts of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes added together.
Karana
Half a tithi: two in each lunar day, from a cycle of eleven.

What is a panchang?

The panchang is the Hindu almanac of the day. Its name means “five limbs”: the tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's star), yoga and karana. Together they describe the quality of the day and are used to choose good times for prayers, fasts, festivals and new beginnings.

How to read today's panchang

Each limb runs until the time shown, then the next begins — a tithi or nakshatra can change during the day. By tradition the day is named after the tithi running at sunrise, which is why festivals follow the sunrise of your city.

Under the five limbs are the day's good times (Brahma and Abhijit muhurta), the times traditionally avoided (Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika) and the Choghadiya of the day and night. Today's shubh muhurat

Why it changes by city

Sunrise and sunset differ across India by more than an hour, and the muhurats, Rahu kaal and Choghadiya are counted from them. Choose your city above for times that are right where you are.

Questions

What is a panchang?

The Hindu almanac of the day: its five limbs are the tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, with the time each one ends.

What is today's tithi?

The tithi shown above is the lunar day running at sunrise in your city, with the time it ends; the next tithi begins then.

Is the panchang the same everywhere in India?

The limbs change at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise differs by city, so the day's tithi, muhurats and Rahu kaal can differ. Pick your city for exact times.

What is Rahu kaal today?

About an hour and a half of the day, traditionally avoided for new beginnings; its time is shown above for your city.

Amanta or Purnimanta month?

Both are shown: Amanta months end on the new moon (used in much of the south and west), Purnimanta months on the full moon (used in the north).

How is it calculated?

From the exact positions of the Sun and Moon (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa) and your city's sunrise and sunset.
