Question 1

What is a panchang?

Accepted Answer

The Hindu almanac of the day: its five limbs are the tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, with the time each one ends.

Question 2

What is today's tithi?

Accepted Answer

The tithi shown above is the lunar day running at sunrise in your city, with the time it ends; the next tithi begins then.

Question 3

Is the panchang the same everywhere in India?

Accepted Answer

The limbs change at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise differs by city, so the day's tithi, muhurats and Rahu kaal can differ. Pick your city for exact times.

Question 4

What is Rahu kaal today?

Accepted Answer

About an hour and a half of the day, traditionally avoided for new beginnings; its time is shown above for your city.

Question 5

Amanta or Purnimanta month?

Accepted Answer

Both are shown: Amanta months end on the new moon (used in much of the south and west), Purnimanta months on the full moon (used in the north).

Question 6

How is it calculated?

Accepted Answer

From the exact positions of the Sun and Moon (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa) and your city's sunrise and sunset.
