Vedic astrology software for professional consultations
If you consult clients for a living, your software has two jobs. It must calculate correctly and deeply enough for your school, and it must help you answer a client clearly within the time they are paying for. This article compares the tools Vedic astrologers commonly use on both counts, says plainly what each is best at, and ends with a way to choose by type of practice.
Pricing is given only as "free" or "paid — check with the vendor", because prices and editions change. Nothing here is sponsored, and no tool is ranked as "best" overall.
Definitions
- Desktop calculation program: software installed on a computer that calculates charts, dashas, divisional charts and tables, usually with many options per calculation. Most are Windows programs.
- Consultation workspace: software organised around a client session rather than around calculations: what to look at before the call, what to say, and what to check while the client is speaking.
- Vargas: divisional charts (D1, D9, D10 and so on).
- MD / AD / PD: mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, the first three levels of a dasha.
- CSL: cusp sub lord in KP.
- Prashna (horary): a chart for a question rather than a birth.
How to evaluate a tool
Look at six things, in this order:
- Calculation scope for your school. A KP astrologer needs cusp sub lords, significators and ruling planets. A Parashari astrologer needs vargas, dashas, strength measures and yogas. A Jaimini practitioner needs chara karakas, arudhas and sign dashas.
- Options and conventions. Ayanamsa choice, house systems, true or mean nodes, year length for dashas. If you trained in one convention, the software must support it.
- Speed during a call. How many clicks from "the client asked about marriage" to the relevant dashas, transits and cusp?
- Platforms. Windows only, Mac, phone, or browser.
- Client output. Printed reports, PDFs, or text you can send.
- Maturity. How long the tool has existed and how widely it is used, which affects how many calculation edge cases have been found and fixed.
The tools
Jagannatha Hora
Written by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao and distributed free. The official page lists version 8.0, released in 2016, and says it runs on Windows (it names Windows 95 through Windows 7); it does not run natively on Mac, Linux or phones, though some users run it through Windows emulation.
Best at: calculation breadth and configurability. Its feature list covers many dasha systems (Vimshottari variants, Ashtottari, Kalachakra, Yogini, Narayana and more), standard divisional charts plus custom ones, Shadbala and avasthas, Ashtakavarga including reductions, Panchanga, Tajaka annual charts, KP nakshatra and sub lords to several levels, and prashna numbers in 1–108, 1–249 and 1–1800 ranges. For research and for astrologers who want to control every option, it is the reference many others are measured against.
Trade-offs: a Windows-only interface designed for calculation, not for running a client session; no recent release.
Parashara's Light
A long-established commercial program. The vendor currently sells Parashara's Light 9 in Mac and Windows editions, plus a dual licence, and a separate Vedic Astrology Bookshelf of classical text for Windows.
Best at: a polished desktop interface with customisable screens, interactive charts, dasha scrolling and interpretation hints, and a long track record with professional users. It is one of the few full-featured Vedic programs with a native Mac edition.
Pricing: paid — check with the vendor.
LeoStar (Future Point)
Future Point's desktop software, described by the vendor as a Windows kundli and astrology program and as the successor to Leo Gold, which dates back to the 1980s. The vendor also lists an Android edition (LeoTouch), a free mobile app, and a horoscope API.
Best at: Indian consultation practice where kundli output and matching matter, from a vendor with a long history in the Indian market.
Pricing: paid — check with the vendor (the vendor also offers some free online tools).
Kala
Produced by Kala Occult Publishers, Ernst Wilhelm's publishing house. The current version listed by the vendor is Kala 2023. It is built for Windows; the vendor explains that Mac users need a Windows layer or virtual machine. The interface is available in English and several European languages.
Best at: classical Parashari and Jaimini depth. The vendor's calculation list includes Ashtakavarga with reductions and pindas, many sign-based dashas (Chara, Narayana-type, Kalachakra and others), chara karakas in both seven- and eight-karaka schemes, avasthas, extensive muhurta tools, a prashna module, varshaphala, and KP sub lords to five levels.
Pricing: paid — check with the vendor.
Free KP programs
Several free desktop programs are written specifically for KP. Two that KP astrologers often mention:
- KP New Astro: free and released under the GNU GPL. It casts natal and 1–249 horary charts with KP ayanamsa, cusp and planet sub and sub-sub lords, and exports reports. The most recent version listed is a beta from 2011, so check compatibility with your system.
- Jyotishya Deepika: free, KP-specific software (version 5.2.2 is the one listed for download).
Best at: getting KP cusps, sub lords and horary charts at no cost. Trade-offs: older interfaces, limited Parashari features, and little active development. Download only from the developer's or a well-known distribution page.
Phone apps
Many astrologers keep a phone app for quick look-ups between sessions. AstroSage is a common example: it offers Android and iOS apps and web tools covering kundli, KP charts and horary, ruling planets, kundli matching including South Indian porutham, and many Indian languages. Basic features are free and paid services are also sold. LeoStar's mobile editions serve a similar role.
Best at: speed, language coverage and being in your pocket. Trade-offs: small screens, and less control over calculation options than desktop software.
AstroReads
A web workspace built around the consultation rather than around the calculation screen. It runs in the browser and is new.
What it does:
- A brief prepared before the call: running dashas, Saturn cycles (Sade Sati, Ashtama and Kantaka Shani with dates), and dated windows for each life area, with the reasons behind each window.
- ⌘K search over 31 prepared answers to common client questions, so you can open the relevant one while the client is still asking.
- Client lines in English, Hindi or Hinglish that you can read out or send.
- Kundli matching: Ashtakoota with dosha cancellations, Manglik from lagna, Moon and Venus, and both partners' KP 7th CSL verdicts.
- An assistant that answers from the computed chart, quoting the calculated values rather than computing on its own.
- Calculation scope: 16 vargas; Vimshottari to pratyantar; KP cusps and planets to sub-sub lord with four-level significators; horary 1–249; 14 yogas; Ashtakavarga.
Where it is weaker, plainly: it has no Shadbala, no avasthas, no Panchang, no Arudha padas, no chara karakas, no Bhava chalit chart, no sookshma or prana dashas, and no dasha system other than Vimshottari (no Yogini, Chara or others). Ashtakavarga has no shodhana (reductions). The ayanamsa is fixed (Lahiri for Parashari, Krishnamurti for KP). Matching is North Indian Ashtakoota only, without South Indian porutham. It does not generate printed reports and does not work offline. As a new product it has not had the years of use that the desktop programs have.

Worked example
Here is what a pre-call brief contains for Example A, a fictional birth (14 Mar 1990, 06:20 IST, Pune), with values computed on 2026-10-09. The point is to show the kind of preparation a consultation workspace does, which a desktop program leaves to you.
Running periods. Jupiter MD (2012-07-01 to 2028-07-01), Rahu AD (2026-02-06 to 2028-07-01), Jupiter PD (2026-06-17 to 2026-10-12). Saturn MD follows from 2028-07-01.
Saturn cycles. Kantaka Shani with Saturn in Pisces from 2025-03-29 to 2027-06-02, then Ashtama Shani in Aries from 2027-06-02 to 2027-10-20. Saturn's retrograde return to Pisces gives Kantaka again from 2027-10-20 to 2028-02-23, followed by Ashtama from 2028-02-23 to 2029-08-08.
A dated window with reasons. For marriage, the next window runs from 2026-10-12 to 2027-02-28, marked moderate and supportive. The reasons listed: in KP, the Jupiter MD signifies 2 and 11, the Rahu AD signifies 11 and the Saturn PD signifies 7 and 11, so together the period lords cover 2, 7 and 11; transiting Jupiter aspects the 7th from the Moon with 5 bindus; Jupiter and Saturn both influence the 7th from the Moon (double transit); and Jupiter occupies the 7th from lagna with 4 bindus.
The KP promise. Example A's 7th CSL is Jupiter, which signifies 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11 and 12. It touches the positive houses 2 and 11 and the negative houses 1 and 6, so the verdict is conditional.
Matching. Example A with Example B (also fictional) scores 17.5 of 36 in Ashtakoota, with Gana and Bhakoot doshas and full Nadi points (8 of 8). Both are Manglik from lagna and Venus, and both cases are cancelled: for A because Mars is exalted, for B because Mars is conjunct Jupiter. Both partners' KP 7th CSL verdicts are conditional.
In a desktop program you can find every one of these values, but you collect them yourself across several screens. A workspace collects them before the call, and you decide what to say.
How to choose by type of practice
KP-first, horary-heavy practice. You need fast cusp sub lords, significators and ruling planets. A free KP program or Jagannatha Hora covers the calculation. Add a consultation workspace if you also handle natal clients and want windows and significators prepared before each call.
Parashari research and teaching. You need many dasha systems, Shadbala, avasthas, Arudha padas, chara karakas and custom vargas. Jagannatha Hora or Kala is the natural fit. A consultation workspace will not replace them.
Jaimini and classical-text work. Kala's calculation list and Jagannatha Hora's dasha range are built for this.
High-volume paid consultations (phone, video or chat). Time per answer matters most. A consultation workspace, with a brief, searchable answers and client-ready lines, can save time here. Keep a desktop program for anything it does not calculate.
Mac users. Parashara's Light has a native Mac edition. Web tools run in any browser. Windows programs need a compatibility layer or virtual machine.
Matching-focused practice. If clients are mostly from South India, you need porutham as well as Ashtakoota; several desktop programs and apps provide it. If you use KP for marriage, check that the tool shows both partners' 7th CSL, not only the guna total.
Report-led practice. If you sell printed or PDF reports, choose a desktop program with report generation, and ask the vendor for sample reports before buying.
Where traditions differ
KP-first or Parashari-first. KP astrologers judge the promise from cusp sub lords and time events with significators and ruling planets. Parashari astrologers weigh house lords, dignity, yogas, vargas and dashas, often with several dasha systems as cross-checks. Software built for one school can feel incomplete to the other. Many astrologers blend them, using Parashari for the overall picture and KP for yes-or-no promise and timing.
Ayanamsa and conventions. Some astrologers use Lahiri for everything, some use the Krishnamurti ayanamsa for KP, and some prefer Raman or others. Desktop programs usually let you choose. The workspace described above fixes Lahiri for Parashari work and Krishnamurti for KP. If your training uses another ayanamsa, a tool with a choice is the right one for you.
Calculation tools versus consultation workspaces. One view holds that the astrologer should compute and inspect everything personally, and that a prepared brief can hide important detail. The other holds that a prepared brief, with the reasons shown, frees the astrologer to think about the client. Both are legitimate. Tools in the second group should show their reasons so that you can check them, and they still leave the judgement to you.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by feature count alone. A long feature list helps research, but in a timed consultation the time to reach an answer matters more.
- Mixing conventions between tools. If your desktop program uses one ayanamsa or node type and your other tool uses another, sub lords near boundaries can disagree. Check settings before comparing.
- Trusting any single tool on an edge case. Births near a sign or sub boundary, high latitudes and uncertain birth times deserve a second calculation.

Questions
Is Jagannatha Hora still free?
Yes. Jagannatha Hora by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao is free. It is a Windows program; the latest version listed on its official page is 8.0, released in 2016.
Which software is best for KP astrology?
For pure KP calculation, dedicated free KP programs and Jagannatha Hora's KP tables cover sub lords and horary numbers 1–249. Choose based on whether you need deep calculation options or a faster consultation flow, and check that the significator method matches the one you use.
Does Parashara's Light run on Mac?
Yes. The vendor sells Parashara's Light 9 in separate Mac and Windows editions, and a dual licence for both.
Can I run Kala or Jagannatha Hora on a Mac?
Both are Windows programs. Mac users generally run them through a Windows compatibility layer or a Windows virtual machine; Kala's vendor describes these options on its own site.
Do I need more than one astrology program?
Often yes. Many professionals keep one desktop program for deep calculation and research, and use a separate tool for preparing and running client consultations.
