Pisces (Meen)

Meen: the sign of the fishes

Pisces is called Meen in Hindi and Meena in Sanskrit, meaning fish. It is the twelfth and last rashi and spans 330 to 360 degrees of the sidereal zodiac. As the end of the circle, it is linked with completion, surrender, spiritual release and the ocean from which all things arise and to which they return.

Its symbol is a pair of fishes, usually shown swimming in opposite directions, one toward the world and one toward the spirit. Fish move freely in water and sense currents that others cannot see. In the Kalapurusha, Pisces is traditionally given the feet, the last part of the body and the part that touches the ground in humility.

Lord, element and modality

Jupiter (Guru) rules Pisces, as it rules Sagittarius. Jupiter signifies wisdom, faith, compassion, teachers and children. In Sagittarius its nature is philosophical and outgoing; in Pisces it becomes devotional, gentle and inward, more concerned with grace than with argument.

Pisces is a Water sign of Dual (dwiswabhava) nature, female in classical terms, and linked with the North. Water brings sensitivity and intuition; the dual quality makes the sign adaptable, able to flow around obstacles and to see more than one truth.

• Lord: Jupiter
• Element: Water
• Modality: Dual (dwiswabhava)
• Direction: North
• Symbol: the fishes

Pisces as your Moon sign

With a Meen rashi, the Moon was in Pisces at birth. These natives tend to be compassionate, imaginative and intuitive. They feel what others feel, are drawn to music, art and faith, and are kind by nature.

Their inner world is rich, full of dreams, images and quiet reflection. They may need solitude to recharge after crowds. Because they absorb the moods around them, a peaceful environment matters a great deal to their own peace of mind.

Career and money

Pisces does well in caring, creative and spiritual work: music, painting, film and the arts, counselling, the healing professions as a field, charity and social service, religion, teaching, and work connected with water, shipping or travel abroad. They bring sensitivity and imagination to whatever they do.

With money, Pisces can be generous to a fault and sometimes vague about details. The twelfth house of the natural zodiac, which Pisces represents, governs expenses, foreign lands, retreat and spiritual liberation. A simple budget and a trusted adviser help them keep generosity balanced with security.

Love, marriage and relationships

Pisces is tender, romantic and devoted in love. These natives give a great deal and often sense a partner's needs without being told. They want a relationship with emotional and even spiritual depth.

In marriage, their challenge is losing themselves in the other person or avoiding hard conversations. Clear boundaries, and saying what they need, keep their love strong and their kindness from being taken for granted.

Family, home and friends

At home, Pisces natives tend to be gentle, accommodating and sympathetic listeners. They often keep up family rituals and prayers and create a calm, devotional atmosphere.

Their friendships are warm and accepting. People confide in them easily, and they are slow to judge. Choosing friends who give back as much as they take protects their energy.

Strengths and what to work on

The fishes swim between two worlds; a firm sense of direction lets them enjoy both.

• Strengths: compassion, imagination, intuition, adaptability, a generous spirit
• To work on: escapism, indecision, being taken advantage of, avoiding practical matters
• A helpful practice: setting one clear, practical goal each week

Compatibility with other signs

Jupiter counts the Sun, the Moon and Mars as natural friends. Pisces therefore tends to feel at ease with Leo (Sun), Cancer (Moon), and Aries and Scorpio (Mars). Jupiter treats Mercury and Venus as enemies, so Gemini and Virgo (Mercury) and Taurus and Libra (Venus) may need more patience. Virgo, the sign opposite Pisces, often supplies the practical sense Pisces needs. By element, Cancer and Scorpio share its depth of feeling, and the Earth signs give it a steady shore.

These are tendencies only. Marriage matching reads both full charts and the Ashtakoot score.

Nakshatras in Pisces

Pisces opens with the last quarter of Purva Bhadrapada and then holds Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati in full, closing the zodiac.

• Purva Bhadrapada, pada 4 (0° to 3°20′), ruled by Jupiter
• Uttara Bhadrapada, all four padas (3°20′ to 16°40′), ruled by Saturn
• Revati, all four padas (16°40′ to 30°), ruled by Mercury

Planets exalted, debilitated and at home in Pisces

Venus is exalted in Pisces, most strongly at 27 degrees, where love becomes selfless and devotional. Mercury is debilitated here, most deeply at 15 degrees, since its logic and detail struggle in a sign of feeling and imagination; a Pisces Mercury tends to learn to trust intuition alongside reason. Jupiter is in its own sign in Pisces.
