How it is kept
A morning bath, worship of Vishnu (often the Satyanarayan katha), charity, and in some homes a fast until moonrise.
Why it is kept
Purnima, the full-moon day, closes each month in the purnimanta calendar and is held auspicious throughout India. Many of the year's festivals fall on it, and in many homes it is kept every month with a fast, the Satyanarayan katha and charity; the full Moon is honoured with an offering of water (arghya) at moonrise.
How it is kept, step by step
- A morning bath, in a river or holy water where possible; many take a dip on the great Purnimas of Kartika and Magha.
- Worship of Vishnu, often with the Satyanarayan katha in the evening, with family and neighbours.
- Charity: food, clothes or grain for those in need, which tradition holds especially meritorious on Purnima.
- Those who fast keep it through the day and offer arghya to the Moon at moonrise before breaking it.
The fast
The Purnima fast is lighter than Ekadashi's: most keep it until moonrise with fruit and milk, or eat one meal without grains, and break it after offering arghya to the Moon. Where the Satyanarayan katha is held, its prasad (sheera or panjiri) ends the day. Fast as your health allows: children, elders, pregnant women and anyone unwell traditionally keep a lighter fast, and anyone with a medical condition should ask their doctor first.
