How it is kept

A fast through the day and the worship of Shiva in the pradosh period after sunset.

Why it is kept

Pradosh is the twilight after sunset, and the Pradosh vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth day of each lunar half, when that twilight falls in it. The Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana praise this hour: tradition says Shiva dances in joy on Kailash at pradosh, and the gods gather to worship him.

How it is kept, step by step

  1. The fast through the day, as one is able, often with fruit and milk.
  2. A bath before sunset and fresh clothes.
  3. In the pradosh window after sunset, abhishek of the Shivling with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee, and offerings of bel leaves, flowers and a lamp.
  4. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya, and reading the Pradosh vrat katha of that weekday.
  5. Worship of Nandi too: in many temples Nandi is bathed first.
  6. The fast is broken after the evening puja.

The fast

Most keep the Pradosh fast from sunrise to the evening puja, with fruit, milk and water during the day, and break it after worship with a simple sattvic meal. Some keep it without water. Fast as your health allows: children, elders, pregnant women and anyone unwell traditionally keep a lighter fast, and anyone with a medical condition should ask their doctor first.

Pradosh by its weekday

Soma Pradosh (Monday)
The most widely kept, Monday being Shiva's own day.
Bhauma Pradosh (Tuesday)
Named for Mars (Bhauma, or Mangal).
Budha Pradosh (Wednesday)
Named for Mercury (Budha).
Guru Pradosh (Thursday)
Named for Jupiter (Guru).
Shukra Pradosh (Friday)
Named for Venus (Shukra).
Shani Pradosh (Saturday)
Kept with special devotion, with the worship of Shani as well as Shiva.
Ravi Pradosh (Sunday)
Named for the Sun (Ravi).

Across India

In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Pradosham is among the busiest hours in Shiva temples: Nandi is bathed first, and devotees go around the shrine in the somasutra pradakshina. In North India and Maharashtra the vrat is kept at home and in Shiva temples, and Soma and Shani Pradosh draw the most devotees.

Questions

What is Pradosh Vrat?

The thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of each lunar half, sacred to Shiva; named by its weekday (Soma Pradosh on Monday, Shani Pradosh on Saturday).

How is Pradosh Vrat kept?

A fast through the day and the worship of Shiva in the pradosh period after sunset.

Why does the Pradosh Vrat date differ between calendars?

Each calendar computes for a place: a tithi that begins or ends near sunrise (or moonrise, or the evening) can fall on different civil days in different cities. These dates are for the city shown; choose yours above.

What is the pradosh time?

The twilight after sunset, about an hour and a half from sunset in common practice. The vrat is kept on the day whose pradosh time falls in Trayodashi; the dates table gives the window for your city.

Why is Pradosh kept twice a month?

Trayodashi comes in both halves of each lunar month, so there are about 24 Pradosh vrats in a year; many keep both, some only the one in the dark half.

What is Soma Pradosh?

A Pradosh that falls on a Monday, Shiva's day, kept by many as the most auspicious of the Pradosh vrats.

What is offered to Shiva on Pradosh?

Water and milk for the abhishek, bel leaves, white flowers, sandalwood, a lamp and incense; many offer to Nandi too. Tradition leaves out turmeric, kumkum and ketaki flowers in Shiva's worship.
