The meaning of Krittika and its symbol

Krittika is the third of the 27 nakshatras. The name is linked with the root krit, to cut, and is often explained as "the one who cuts". In the sky it is the famous cluster of stars known in the West as the Pleiades, and in India as the six Krittikas, the star mothers.

Its symbol is a razor or a flame. Both cut away what is not needed: the blade separates, and fire burns off impurity and leaves what is pure. Krittika therefore stands for sharp discernment, purification, and the warmth and light that fire gives to a home.

The deity: Agni

The deity of Krittika is Agni, the god of fire. Agni is the first god named in the Rig Veda. He is the priest of the sacrifice and the messenger who carries offerings from people to the gods, and he lives in every hearth, every lamp and the digestive fire of every body.

The Puranas tell how the six Krittikas nursed the infant Kartikeya, the warrior son of Shiva, who took six faces to feed from all six of them. He is therefore called Kartikeya, "the son of the Krittikas". The nakshatra carries both sides of this story: fiery courage, and fierce, protective nurturing.

Lord, gana, yoni, nadi and nature

The Sun rules Krittika, so a person born with the Moon here begins life in the six-year Sun Mahadasha. With the Sun as lord and Agni as deity, this is one of the most fiery nakshatras, full of light, authority and self-respect.

Its gana is Rakshasa, a temperament described as independent, intense and strong-willed rather than soft. Its yoni is the sheep, an animal that seems mild but holds its ground. Its nadi is Antya, linked by tradition with the Kapha (water and earth) constitution. By nature it belongs to the Mishra or mixed group, suited to everyday and practical work.

Where Krittika falls in the zodiac

Krittika spans Aries 26°40′ to Taurus 10°00′. Its first pada lies in Aries, the sign of Mars, where the Sun is exalted, and its other three padas lie in Taurus, the sign of Venus. This split gives two flavours of Krittika: the fiery, assertive Aries pada and the steadier, more earthy Taurus padas.

The point of the Moon's exaltation, 3° Taurus, falls within Krittika's second pada. A nakshatra ruled by the Sun thus holds the Moon's highest point, a meeting of the two lights that classical writers noted with interest.

The four padas of Krittika

Each pada spans 3°20′, falls in a navamsha sign that colours it, and carries a traditional sound for a name.

  • Pada 1: Aries, Sagittarius navamsha, name sound A: idealistic, principled, frank
  • Pada 2: Taurus, Capricorn navamsha, name sound I: practical, ambitious, persistent
  • Pada 3: Taurus, Aquarius navamsha, name sound U: thoughtful, humanitarian, independent
  • Pada 4: Taurus, Pisces navamsha, name sound E: gentle, devoted, imaginative

Personality

People born in Krittika tend to be direct, determined and protective. They are honest, sometimes sharp in speech, and loyal to those they care for. They have a strong sense of right and wrong and little patience for pretence.

Like fire, they can warm or they can scorch. Their natural gift is clarity: they see what is true and say it. The lesson that often comes with this nakshatra is softening the delivery without dulling the truth, so that their honesty helps rather than hurts. Many are also generous hosts, true to the fire of the hearth.

Career and work

Krittika's sharpness and the Sun's authority suit work that calls for judgement, standards and leadership. Traditional associations include government and administration, the armed forces and police, editing and criticism, teaching, surgery and precision work, and anything to do with fire, metals or cooking.

They tend to be valued as the person who will say what needs saying and enforce what needs enforcing. Roles with clear responsibility and the freedom to act on principle usually suit them better than work that asks them to keep quiet.

Love and relationships

In relationships Krittika natives tend to be fiercely loyal and protective, like the star mothers guarding the young Kartikeya. They show love by looking after their partner's welfare and standing by them in public.

Their directness can feel blunt to a sensitive partner, and their pride may make it hard to apologise first. A partner who values honesty, and who can meet their fire with calm, tends to bring out their warm and devoted side.

Compatibility

Krittika's sheep yoni is shared with Pushya, and same-yoni pairs score highest in this part of Ashtakoota matching. The sheep is traditionally set opposite the monkey, the yoni of Purva Ashadha and Shravana, so that pairing scores lowest here.

As a Rakshasa gana nakshatra, Krittika is traditionally most comfortable with other Rakshasa nakshatras, while matches with Deva and Manushya natives are scored lower on gana. A lower score on one factor is common and is weighed against the other factors and both full charts; it describes a tendency, not a verdict.

What is traditionally begun under Krittika

As a Mishra nakshatra, Krittika is traditionally chosen for everyday work and routine tasks. Its fiery nature also makes it a traditional choice for work with fire and metals, cooking, lighting a sacred fire and tasks that need clear, firm action. As with any muhurta, the rest of the day's panchang is considered too.
