The 9th House (Dharma)

What the 9th house signifies

The 9th house is Dharma bhava, the house of right conduct, and Bhagya bhava, the house of fortune. It covers fortune, faith, father, teachers and gurus, higher learning, pilgrimage, long journeys and a person's sense of purpose.

Classical texts count it as the most auspicious house of the chart, the place where past merit and present conduct come together as grace.

Natural sign and its lord

In the natural zodiac the 9th house is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter. Sagittarius is philosophical, generous and drawn to distant horizons, which matches a house of wisdom, belief and travel. In a real chart, read the sign on the 9th house and its own lord.

The karakas of the 9th house

Jupiter and the Sun are the karakas of the 9th house. Jupiter signifies the guru, wisdom and fortune. The Sun signifies the father and the dignity of dharma. Both are checked when reading teachers, father and the overall blessing in a chart.

A Trikona house

The 9th house is a Trikona, one of the three trines (1, 5, 9) known as houses of fortune and dharma. Among the Trikonas, the 9th is traditionally the strongest, so its lord is welcome in every chart.

When the 9th lord joins or exchanges with the 10th lord, classical texts describe a Dharma Karma Adhipati yoga, a combination linking purpose with action.
