What the 1st house signifies

The 1st house is Tanu bhava, the house of the body, and also the Lagna: the sign rising in the east at birth. Classical texts treat it as the self: appearance, temperament, vitality, confidence and the general direction of life.

Every other house is counted from the Lagna, so its sign, lord and planets colour the whole chart.

Natural sign and its lord

In the natural zodiac the 1st house corresponds to Aries, the first sign, ruled by Mars. Aries brings beginning, initiative and courage, which is why the 1st house is linked with fresh starts.

In a real chart the 1st house can hold any sign. The natural sign explains the house's flavour; the real reading uses the sign actually rising and its ruler, the Lagna lord.

The karaka of the 1st house

The Sun is the karaka, or natural significator, of the 1st house. The Sun stands for the soul, vitality and self-respect. A well-placed Sun tends to support a clear sense of identity; a Sun under pressure suggests confidence built slowly through experience.

The karaka is read alongside the Lagna lord, never on its own. Many astrologers also use the Moon sign as a second Lagna for the mind and emotions.

A Kendra and a Trikona at once

The 1st house belongs to two groups. It is a Kendra, one of the four angles (1, 4, 7, 10) that are the pillars of the chart, and a Trikona, one of the trines (1, 5, 9) of fortune and dharma.

No other house holds both roles, so the Lagna lord is traditionally favourable in every chart. Mercury and Jupiter gain directional strength (dig bala) here.

The nine planets in the 1st house

Tendencies only, changed by sign and aspects.

  • Sun: dignity, self-respect and a natural wish to lead
  • Moon: a sensitive, caring and changeable temperament
  • Mars: drive, courage and a direct, energetic manner
  • Mercury: a quick, youthful and talkative nature
  • Jupiter: optimism, good judgement and a respected presence
  • Venus: charm, grace and a love of beauty and comfort
  • Saturn: seriousness and patience that mature into quiet strength
  • Rahu: ambition, an unusual image and a restless search for identity
  • Ketu: a detached, inward-looking and intuitive nature

The 1st lord in each house

Where the Lagna lord sits shows where a person's attention and energy tend to flow.

  • In the 1st: self-reliant and focused on personal direction
  • In the 2nd: attention on family, savings and speech
  • In the 3rd: courage, self-effort and skill in communication
  • In the 4th: attachment to home, mother and inner peace
  • In the 5th: a creative, learned mind and love of children
  • In the 6th: strength in service, work and competition
  • In the 7th: life shaped by partnership and dealings with others
  • In the 8th: interest in research, hidden matters and transformation
  • In the 9th: faith, the support of teachers and a dharmic outlook
  • In the 10th: drive towards career and public standing
  • In the 11th: gains through friends, networks and goals
  • In the 12th: interest in distant places, spirituality and giving

How to read the 1st house in a chart

Start with the rising sign, then judge the Lagna lord's sign, house and dignity. Then note the planets in and aspecting the 1st house.

  • Judge the Lagna lord's strength before reading any other house
  • A benefic aspect on the Lagna is read as support for the whole chart
  • Compare the Lagna with the Moon sign for a fuller picture of the person
  • An empty 1st house is common; read it from its lord and aspects
