What it is
The bonfire on the full-moon evening of Phalguna, the night before Holi. It recalls Prahlad, whose faith kept him safe in the fire that consumed Holika.
Why it matters
The triumph of faith over arrogance, remembered by burning Holika's pyre on the eve of Holi.
How it is traditionally kept
A bonfire lit at the evening muhurat (outside Bhadra, as tradition asks), circled with offerings of grain, coconut and cow-dung cakes.
- Gather wood and cow-dung cakes for the pyre
- Worship the pyre with roli, rice, flowers and a thread tied around it
- Light it at the evening muhurat, avoiding Bhadra
- Walk around the fire and offer new grain
- Take the ash home as a blessing
Across India
Known as Chhoti Holi in the north and Kamadahana in parts of the south.
